ZEUGMA

This antique city that was a place of continuous settlement was founded on one of the two places where Euphrate river can easily be crossed. ' Zeugma ' name means crossing point. Today the city is covered with 3-4 meters of soil. One third of  this, 20 thousand acres of antique city will be under water because of water collecting facility for Birecik Dam. Zeugma lived its most magnificent days in second century A.D. and was one of the four biggest towns of  the empire. Zeugma was a really important settlement because it had 4 legion headquarters with high ranked officers and preferred by the merchants because of its strategic position. But this magnificent town was destroyed and buried into the ground because of the wars and natural disasters.
